In the age of 5G, Anadaman & Nicobar Islands struggling for access to 3G
Port Blair/UNI: While many countries are moving ahead with 5G telecom connectivity, the southernmost landmass of India, the Great Nicobar Island, is still struggling with 2G network.
Presently, BSNL is the only telecom service provider in Great Nicobar Island, which is the Southernmost Island of Andaman and Nicobar Island chain and Southernmost landmass of India.
Residents of Great Nicobar are now raising voice against the injustice of providing only 2G network in the far flung Island, whereas Airtel has recently launched 4G in Port Blair, the capital town of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Recently, the Up-Adhyaksh, South Andaman Zilla Parishad, Mr Gagandeep Singh Grewal has urged the Chief General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Andaman and Nicobar Islands to upgrade all 2G towers to atleast 3G towers in the Great Nicobar Islands so that the internet
speed in the Great Nicobar Islands improves and it helps the youths to download study materials and fill online forms of SSC, UPSC and other government departments, without any problem.
“The world is currently moving to 5G but here in the Great Nicobar Islands the people are still forced to use the 2G services, which is unacceptable,” he said.
Meanwhile, the good news for entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands is that the work to install a 2,300-km undersea optical submarine cable system for high-speed internet connecting Andaman and Nicobar Islands to mainland India through Chennai will begin in December.
Japanese tech major, NEC Corporation, has been contracted by the BSNL to design, engineer, supply, install, test and implement the cablesystem.
It is expected that once undersea optical submarine cable system is in place and eight major Islands are connected with this optical submarine cable the situation in remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands will greatly improve.
