I am no longer Congress president: Rahul Gandhi

| @indiablooms | Jul 03, 2019, at 03:27 pm

New Delhi, July 3 (IBNS): Remaining firm with his decision of not continuing as the Congress president after the Lok Sabha poll debacle, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the party's working committee should elect a new chief “without further delay", media reports said.

According to reports, Gandhi told the media that he was not a part of the process of electing the president as he had already resigned from the position.

He then tweeted: "It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love."

He also shared a letter to his party in which he held himself responsible for the loss of Congress in 2019 elections and said to ensure accountability he is resigning.

He said he would not select the next party president as well and said it should be entrusted with a group of people from Congress.

Meanwhile, a new Congress president will be chosen "within a week", party sources have told NDTV.

Gandhi had resigned from the post after his party suffered a major setback in the Lok Sabha polls where the BJP has once against defeated it to form the central government for the second straight term.

Congress workers have been insisting him to take back the decision of resignation.
