I am disheartened: Canada-based Punjabi singer Shubh breaks his silence over India tour cancellation

| @indiablooms | Sep 22, 2023, at 04:07 pm

Canada-based singer Shubhneet Singh, who is popularly known by his stage name Shubh, said he felt 'disheartened' after his India tour was cancelled following allegations of his support for Khalistan.

In his Instagram post, the Punjabi singer said he was 'highly amped up and enthusiastic' to perform in his home country.

Ticket booking platform BookMyShow on Wednesday cancelled the upcoming Indian tour of Canada-based rapper Shubhneet Singh aka Shubh.

The company announced it will do a complete refund within the next seven to ten days.

Ahead of announcing the cancellation, the platform was facing a boycott call on social media for hosting a singer who is allegedly a Khalistani sympathiser.

What is the controversy around him?

In March, he posted two stories on his Instagram account showing a map of India, which, however, omitted both Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, sparking a massive outcry, reports Hindustan Times.

Shubh, in his latest statement, however, defended himself and wrote: "My intent in resharing that post on my story was only to pray for Punjab as there were reports of electricity and internet shutdowns throughout the state."

"There was no other thought behind it, and I definitely didn't intend to hurt anyone's sentiments," he said.

"The accusations against me have deeply affected me," he said.

Who is Shubh?

Based in Canada, Shubh works predominantly in Punjabi music.

Shubh rose to mainstream in 2021 with his single "We Rollin".

His singles have charted on the UK Asian and UK Punjabi charts published by the Official Charts Company, as well as the Official New Zealand Chart.

His single "Baller" charted on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.

He has a large fan following within the Punjabi diaspora across Canada, United Kingdom, United States, and Australia.

India-Canada diplomatic row

The cancellation of his show occurred at a time when India and Canada are engaged in a diplomatic row after PM Justin Trudeau alleged India's role in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June this year.

India rejected the claims.
