Hindu Munnani, BJP cburn effigy of Kamal Haasan for ‘Hindu terror’ comment
Kanyakumari, May 14 (UNI): Members of the Hindu Munnani and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday burnt an effigy of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan for his “Hindu extremist” comments, at Vadaseri junction in Nagercoil, here.
The protesters, led by Hindu Munnani district president ‘Misa’ Soman and BJP district president S. Muthukrishnan, staged a demonstration, condemning his remarks on Hinduism, after setting the actor-turned-politician’s effigy on fire.
They also demanded the Election Commission to ban MNM party and to take stern action against him.
Police rushed to the site and doused the fire.
Haasan had said: “The first extremist of Independent India was a Hindu and his name was Nathuram Godse.”
The actor-turned-politician had said this during an election campaign in Karur district on Sunday night. It had evoked criticism from the Sangh Parivar outfits across the country.
BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan said it was strongly condemnable that the MNM chief used the phrase “Hindu extremism” in a Muslim-dominated area and his comments amounted to inciting communal violence.
