Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tabled the repeal provincialisation of Madrassa Bill, 2020 in the Assam Legislative Assembly on the first day of the three-day winter session of the state assembly.

Opposition Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had opposed the state government’s move and the opposition MLAs walked out from the assembly.

Assam Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told media the state government has introduced a bill whereby all the government-run Madrassa institutions will be converted to a institute for general education.

“In future, no Madrassa education under the government will be entertained. It is a historic bill. This bill should have been piloted long back, but today we are very happy that we have introduced a bill to bring truly secularize curriculum in the educational system,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

“Both Congress and AIUDF had opposed the bill. But we are determined that, this bill need to be passed and this bill will be accordingly passed,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that, from 1935, the Assam government is patronizing Madrassa education, the Assam government is paying salary to the teachers who are imparting Madrassa education or theological subject in the schools and this practice should have been stopped long back.
