High-level probe into Assam-Nagaland border violence

Sources said both the states had agreed to re-energise border cooperation agreements and asked their senior district officials to regularly hold meetings in view of finding a solution to the local issues.
Meanwhile, normalcy is limping back to Golaghat district in Assam. A large part of the Assam-Nagaland border area remained tense following an ugly turf battle that took place on Tuesday with Assamese protesters staging blockades on the highway.
Sources said a curfew which was imposed between 6 am and 12 noon in the district on Friday was relaxed. If everything goes peacefully beyond 12 noon, further relaxation of curfew is also expected, reports said.
Meanwhile, a dawn to dusk shutdown was called in Assam by the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association on Friday.
Schools, colleges, government offices and many private institutions remained closed amid an uneasy calm and apprehensions of fresh flare-ups in the district.
The Assam-Nagaland border dispute dates back to about 50 years ever since Nagaland achieved statehood. Since then both the neighbouring states have been busy accusing the other of encroachment despite mediation by the Supreme Court.
