Gutkha scam: CBI searches residences of TN Health Minister and others

Chennai, Sept 5 (IBNS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched residences of Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar, Director General of Police TK Rajendran, former state minister BV Ramana and others in connection with the Gutkha scam on Wednesday, media reports said.

The scam pertains to an alleged acceptance of bribe of Rs. 39.91 crore for facilitating the storage, transportation and sale of Gutkha, which is banned, in Chennai.

Former Chennai Police Commissioner S. George's house was also searched by the agency.

A CBI spokesperson told The Hindu, "We are conducting raids on the residences of the Tamil Nadu DGP, State Health Minister and 30 others places in Tamil Nadu in connection with the case relating to the gutkha scam."

The search operation came days after Madhava Rao, the manufacturer of MDM brand of gutkha,was interrogated by the CBI.
