Government gives highest priority to Indian fishermen : Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi, Mar 16 (IBNS) : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday told the Lok Sabha that the Government attaches highest priority to the welfare of the Indian fishermen, captured by the Sri Lankan Navy and has got all of them released.

In a statement, she said  77 fishermen returned to India on Tuesday.

"Our Government attaches highest important to the welfare of the Indian fishermen," she said, adding that  matters of apprehension involving them are consistently taken up with the Government of Sri Lanka through diplomatic channel

She  said Government of India also uses diplomatic channel to take up the matter of Indian fishermen with Sri Lankan Government.

"In no uncertain terms, the Government gives highest priority to Indian fishermen. The issue has been taken up with Sri Lanka. They have reassured us that further action will be taken to investigate the matter. They also said that a probe had been ordered," Swaraj said.
