Gogoi to seek CBI probe into Assam-Nagaland border violence

Guwahati, Aug 23 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced that his government would seek a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the ongoing violence along the Assam-Nagaland border.

Gogoi said the investigation carried out by the government at the additional chief secretary level and judicial probe into the matter would establish the truth behind the incidents including police excesses at Golaghat if any, a government press release said.

The CM said the first priority would be to restore peace in the trouble-prone region and to ensure that the displaced people are returned to their homes.

The decision to seek a probe by the federal investigating agency was taken after a meeting between Gogoi and a joint delegation of seven organisations over the issue.

The representatives of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), Assam Tea Tribes’ Students Association (ATTSA), All Adivasi Student Association of Assam (AASAA) and SC Students’ Union were among those who participated in discussions with the CM.

Gogoi also sought cooperation from the delegations to restore peace in the violence-hit area. He also assured that adequate rehabilitation measures like food and medicine would be provided to people in the affected belts.

The CM said that state the government was mulling to set up a Border Protection Force and Border Development Council. He also told the delegation that the government would urge the Supreme Court for early settlement of the border issue, sources said.
