Goa Congress asks govt to withdraw Section 144 of CrPC before IFFI begins

Panaji/UNI: The Goa Congress on Tuesday asked that state government to withdraw Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) imposed in the state before beginning of 50th edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) which is expected to bring large number of tourists and delegates.

Addressing a press conference at party state headquarters in the city, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar alleged that Section 144 was imposed in the state to suppress voice of the opposition.

The prolonged prohibitory order imposed in the state in view of Ayodhya verdict was to stifle the opposition's voice and protests planned by it, Chodankar alleged.

"There will be thousands of delegates and tourists coming to Goa for IFFI. There is no sense to keep the section 144 of CrPC imposed during this period, which disallows people from congregating together. The government is continuing with the imposition of 144 to prevent opposition from functioning and conducting protests against it," he said.

International Film Festival of India (IFFI), jointly organised by Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Goa Government, is scheduled to be held in the state from Nov 20-28, 2019.
