GJM (Binay Tamang) and TMC protest CAB Bill

| @indiablooms | Dec 11, 2019, at 05:45 pm

Darjeeling/UNI: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (Binay faction) today jointly with the TMC (Hills) staged a dharna against the Citizen Amendment Bill (CAB) in front of the district magistrate premises here.

The protesters also burnt a copy of the CAB, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The CAB Bill also tabled in the Rajya Sabha today by Union Home minister Amit Shah.

Morcha leader Binay Tamang said that if the Rajya Sabha also passes the Bill today then it would be an unfortunate thing for the citizen of the countries and the Gorkhas.

Maintaining that they were against the CAB and the NRC, he claimed that through this Bill they were trying to divide the country in basis of religion.

He also condemned Home Minister Amit Shah maintaining that the 19 lakh people who were left out of the NRC in Assam were illegal immigrants as in that figure there were about 1 lakh Gorkhas.

He said that various treaties with Bhutan and Nepal made matters complicated here with clauses 5, 7, 14 of the CAB will affect the people here.

He also appealed to everyone to support this protest as it would affect all. Similar dharnas were held in Kalimpong, Kurseong, and Mirik.

Tamang said they will see what happens in the Rajya Sabha till the evening and if the results were not good the same type of political situation would arise in this area like Assam.

The dharnas will be held till December 18 with other programs fixed including a protest rally here on December 19 followed by a letter to the Home minister and prime minsiter against CAB and NRC.

They will also gherao central government offices in the GTA area from December 23 to 27.

Other demands to be raised by them include Inner Line Permit to be started for this area along with not to put people in this area along with Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar who get citizenship through the CAB as it would change the demography here.
