'Give us 5 years, we will turn Bengal into Sonar Bangla': Amit Shah

Kolkata/IBNS: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, buoyant by the apparent massive joining in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) including heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday once again urged the voters of the state to give the saffron party one chance to turn West Bengal into "Sonar Bangla".

Shah, who was addressing a rally in Midnapore, said, "You have given the Congress three decades, CPI-M 27 years (34 years) and 10 years to the Trinamool Congress. Give us five years and we will turn Bengal into Sonar Bangla."

Shah's rally was marked by the joining of 10 MLAs from the Trinamool, Left and Congress and one former MP and an ex-Minister on Saturday.

However, the showstopper was Adhikari, a former Trinamool strongman from Medinipur, who joined the saffron camp with barely a few months left for the state polls.

Trying to draw a parallel between the rebel Trinamool leaders' jumping ship to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to leave Congress, Shah during a barely 15-min speech said, "Mamata didi says the BJP takes people from other parties. I want to remind her of her days in Congress. When people of Bengal are coming with BJP to transform the state of Bengal, why is she worried?"

Accusing the Trinamool of meddling with corruption, the Home Minister said, "You had promised development in Bengal. That never happened. Corruption increased, goon-ism increased. All the money sent by Modi for Amphan went to Trinamool Congress goons' pockets."

Not giving much importance to Adhikari's joining in the BJP, West Bengal Minister and Trinamool leader, Firhad Hakim, said, "Mamata Banerjee is the result of a huge struggle. If someone thinks that he will hurt the Trinamool, that is not the case."
