Chennai, June 2 (IBNS) The snowballing controversy over derecognition of a student association of IIT Madras turned violent on Tuesday when students clashed with police during a demonstration outside the premier institute.

Reports said ab out 100 protesters have been detained. The media was not allowed inside the IIT Madras campus.
Protests outside the campus have been a regular feature since last week, when the institute temporarily derecognised the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle for allegedly violating its guidelines.

Students alleged that the authorities took the move following a directive from the Union Human Resources Ministry over a complaint that the study circle was indulging in criticism of the Narendra Modi government.

The opposition DMK and VCK, besides the Congress blamed union minister for human resources Smriti Irani for the act and hit the street with protests that evoked response in other institutes and states as well.

The institute claims the group had been using the IIT name without permission and was indulging in hate campaign.
