Lucknow/UNI: Uttar Pradesh police have suspended four policemen, including SHO of Jamo police station in Amethi, along with three others after a mother-daughter duo from Amethi allegedly set themselves on fire in front of the UP Assembly in Lucknow's Hazratganj area on Friday, citing police inaction in their complaint.

Among the suspended were SHO Jamo Ratan Singh, beat sub inspector and two constables of the same police station, sources here on Saturday said.

According to media reports, some cops and a few journalists rescued the women and rushed them to a civil hospital. The mother is in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Saturday tweeted in Hindi that the incident was serious when a mother and her daughter were forced to commit self-immolation in front of the CM office in Lucknow due to lack of justice from the Amethi district administration in the land dispute case.

She has also appealed to the state government to take the matter seriously and such ignorance by the police should be prevented in future in the state.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, in a tweet, too alleged that the BJP government is not paying any heed to the woes of the poor.
