Former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan quits Congress, likely to join BJP

Mumbai/IBNS: In another jolt to the grand old party, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan quit Congress on Monday.

As per reports, Chavan is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

When asked about whether Chavan will join the saffron camp, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "Several leaders of opposition parties want to join the BJP.

"Especially, Congress leaders are in touch with us because of the way they were treated by the top brass of the party. They feel suffocated in their own party."

"See what happens next," he added.

Chavan, 65, remained the Chief Minister from 2008 to 2010.

In 2010, the Congress had asked him to step down over corruption allegations linked to the Adarsh Housing Society Scam.

In 2014, Chavan won from Nanded constituency of Maharashtra despite the Modi wave in the Lok Sabha elections.

Chavan's resignation comes days after senior leader Baba Siddique dumped Congress and joined the Ajit Pawar camp of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
