Five-member all-faith bench of SC judges starts hearing Triple Talaq

| | May 11, 2017, at 05:33 pm
New Delhi, May 11 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court on Thursday began hearing the sensitive issue on Triple Talaq, reports said.

The issue is being heard by a bench of five judges-Chief Justice of India J S Khehar, Justices Kurian Joseph, Justice  R F Nariman, Justice  U U Lalit and Justice Abdul Nazeer from five different faiths.

The bench, is supposed to hear the lead petition "Quest for Equality vs Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind" over the period of the next six days before giving ruling on the matter.

Along with the case are six other  petitions by different individuals.

CJI JS Khehar had said that the bench will  not get into the issue of polygamy as it’s not related to triple talaq and nikah halala and if triple talaq is found to be not valid, it will be deemed unconstitutional.

The apex court had on its own taken cognisance of the question whether Muslim women faced gender discrimination in the event of  triple talaq, which is a traditional way of getting divorce from the wife by the words of mouth.
