Stockholm: The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Friday.

“Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has been given the prize for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea,” the Nobel Committee said in the announcement.

“The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions,” the announcement added.

The Nobel Committee lauded Abiy Ahmed Ali’s efforts to “work out the principles of a peace agreement to end the long ‘no peace, no war’ stalemate between the Ethiopia and Eritrea”.

After the announcement, the Ethiopian Prime Minister said he was humbled by the award and dedicated it to "Ethiopia and the African continent".

"I am humbled by the decision of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. My deepest gratitude to all committed and working for peace. This award is for Ethiopia and the African continent. We shall prosper in peace!" Abiy Ahmed Ali’s wrote on his twitter handle.

Nobel peace prize has been awarded several times to people associated with eliminating conflicts in their region. In 2016 Juan Manuel Santos of Columbia was awarded the prize for aiding the end of the 50-year old civil war in his country.
