Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday said the recent attack on Hindu community members in Bangladesh can trigger further tensions in the community.

In his media briefing, Jaiswal said: "We have observed that there have been recent attacks on Hindu community in Chittagong. Their properties have been looted. Their business establishments have been looted."

"These happened following incendiary post on social media targeting Hindu religious organization. It is understood that there are extremist elements who are behind such posts and such illegal criminal activities," Jaiswal said.

"This is bound to create further tensions in the community. We yet again, urge the government of Bangladesh to take strong measures to ensure the safety of Hindus and to take action against extremist elements," he said.

Chittagong city witnessed violence when Hindu community members and law enforcement forces clashed over a Facebook post targeting ISKCON.

According to local media reports and social media posts, several Hindu houses, temples and properties were vandalised by radicals after the fall of former PM Sheikh Hasina-led government in August.
