Srinagar/UNI: An encounter ensued between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama on Sunday morning.

Official sources told UNI that following specific information about the presence of militants at Gulshanpora forest in Tral, troops of Rashtriya Rifle, Special Operation Group (SOG) of J&K police and CRPF launched a joint search operation early morning in the area.

However, they said when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the forest, the militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons.

"Security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter," they added.

Additional security forces were rushed to seal all exit points to foil any attempts by the militants to escape, they said, adding that the operation was still going on when the reports last came in.

The CASO was launched hours after security forces arrested two top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commanders in south Kashmir district of Sopian last evening when they were travelling in the car.

An AK47 rifle, a pistol and other arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.
