Elephant calf killed by car in Tamil Nadu

Chenna, Feb 4 (IBNS) In a tragic incident, an elephant calf was killed by a speeding car on a highway in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district on Tuesday.

The two-year-old elephant was in a herd of about 15 migratory pachyderms, heading towards forests in Andhra Pradesh from Karnataka, reports said on Wednesday.

The area where the incident took place is often visited by migratory elephants on the lookout for crops and turns into a man-animal conflict zone.

"Although we have dug elephant proof trenches and have set up solar fences, elephants keep coming as the trenches get silted during rains" District Forest Officer Rajendran said.

Traffic on the Krishnagiri-Hosur Highway was disrupted for a while following the incident.

Forest officials, who rushed to the spot later drove away the jumbos back into the forest.

Cranes were engaged to remove the carcass of the calf.
