Chandigarh/IBNS: The Enforcement Directorate arrested Haryana Congress MLA Surender Panwar in the illegal mining case past midnight, media reports said.

The MLA from Sonepat was arrested from Gurugram.

The ED had conducted raids at Panwar's residences and offices in connection with the case in January this year.

Several First Information Reports were filed by the Haryana Police prior to the raids that were conducted.

The raids were conducted in Yamunanagar, Sonipat and nearby districts.

The arrest comes months ahead of the assembly elections in the state, which is presently under the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The ED had conducted raids at 20 premises which are located in Faridabad, Sonepat, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Chandigarh and Mohali earlier.

The case pertains to the large-scale illegal mining of sand, boulder and gravels by Panwar and former MLA Dilbag Singh.
