Delhi Minority Commission Chief booked under sedition charges

The FIR was filed against Khan on April 30 by a Vasant Kunj resident wherein the complainant alleged that Khan's April 28 statement on Facebook and Twitter are “provocative, intend to cause disharmony and create the rift in the society”, a Hindustan Times report said.

The report said a first information report (FIR) has been registered against Khan under Indian Penal Code sections 124 A (sedition) and 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), according to Joint commissioner of police (special cell) Neeraj Thakur.

Meanwhile, speaking to UNI- Varta, Khan on Saturday said he has not been notified by police in this regard, therefore it would not be possible for him to comment on the matter.

However, he had apologised on Friday on twitter for a controversial comment on the social media by him.

He said when the whole country was undergoing a tough phase due to coronavirus pandemic, such a comment was inappropriate and insensitive.

''I apologise to everyone who's sentiments were hurt," he had said.

Significantly, in his tweet of  April 28, Khan had laso thanked Kuwait for standing with Indian Muslims.

The HT report said he also mentioned the name of a fugitive who has been booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), money laundering and terror cases. A red corner notice has already been issued by the Interpol after the request of Indian government. Khan has praised him among others in his post.

He had also alleged that a section of media had presented his tweet after twisting it, and he had also sent a legal notice to that channel.
