Delhi HC raps AAP govt over funds of municipal corporations
New Delhi/UNI: The Delhi High Court on Monday rapped the Aam Aadmi Party-led Arvind Kejriwal government for recovering outstanding funds from the municipal corporations out of their Basic Tax Assignment (BTA) during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The court also pulled up the government for dismissing a plea by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) seeking two more weeks to clear arrears of serving and retired employees.
The division bench of the HC, which comprised Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli, said, "We don’t live in ivory towers. We see how the government spends on full-page advertisements in newspapers with pictures of politicians."
"Is this not criminal? Spending money in these times on propaganda?", the Court blasted the Delhi government over its expenditure on advertisements while employees are running from pillar to post to get their salaries and added, "You will earn more goodwill by paying their salaries first."
However, the court said it was not inclined to pass any such order and told the NDMC that it has money for everything else.
It said the right of employees to get salaries and pension is a fundamental right and that it was for the corporation to manage the funds for paying them.
"If you cannot meet the expenses, then you should take the haircut. Non-availability of finance cannot be an excuse," the bench added.
