Delhi blast: NIA arrests Al-Falah University MBBS student from West Bengal for suspected terror links

Kolkata/IBNS: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested an MBBS student from West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district over alleged links to extremist organisations, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The accused, Janisur Alam, also known as Nisar Alam, studies MBBS at Al-Falah University in Haryana and hails from a family originally from Konal village near Dalkhola.

He is currently a resident of Ludhiana.

According to police sources, NIA teams picked up Alam from the Surjapur Bazar area on Friday morning while he was returning from a family wedding at his ancestral home.

Investigators had reportedly been monitoring his movements using mobile-tower location data.

How NIA made the arrest

A senior police officer said the medical student had travelled to Uttar Dinajpur with his mother and sister to attend a relative’s wedding.

As he was heading back, NIA officers intercepted him based on prior surveillance.

Another officer noted that Alam had been seen “loitering suspiciously” near a local railway station shortly before his detention.

During preliminary questioning, he allegedly attempted to flee, prompting the agency to formally take him into custody.

Digital devices, documents and other materials were seized from him, and he has reportedly been taken to Siliguri for further interrogation.

Possible link to Delhi Red Fort blast

Investigators are examining whether Alam has any connection to the recent explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, which killed 13 people and injured several others.

While the government has termed the incident a “terrorist attack”, the NIA has not yet disclosed what specific evidence—if any—links Alam to the blast.

“We are still verifying whether he has any direct involvement,” a senior NIA source said. “The investigation is ongoing.”

Family denies any wrongdoing

Relatives have dismissed allegations against the medical student, describing him as quiet, diligent and deeply focused on his studies.

“He was always polite and soft-spoken,” his uncle said. “It is impossible to imagine him being connected to an explosion.”

His mother echoed similar sentiments, calling the accusations “beyond comprehension” and insisting her son has always been law-abiding.

Related NIA activity in Murshidabad

In connection with the same case, the NIA earlier raided the home of Moinul Hasan, a migrant labourer from Murshidabad’s Nabagram area.

Hasan had intermittently worked in Delhi and Mumbai and had reportedly shared accommodation in Delhi with a Bangladeshi national.

Investigators are now probing whether he had links to any extremist groups or maintained contact with Alam.

The NIA has yet to issue an official statement on the charges against Alam or clarify the nature of his alleged terror links.
