CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty detained by police during pro-bandh rally

He was detained after his followers allegedly broke open the iron barricades put up by the police to keep the vehicular traffic normal.

Chakraborty was taken to the Jadavpur police station.

The bandh supporters also stoned the moving government buses to stall the traffic, after which police resorted to baton charged to disperse them. Many bandh supporters were also detained for pelting stones at the police vans in Jadavpur.

The state government in a notification had directed the employees across its offices to remain present on the bandh day and had cancelled leaves from January 7 to 9.

CPI-M state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra, who was leading anther procession, said some 150 bandh supporters have been arrested by the police.

Sporadic violence was also reported from Rashbehari More in south Kolkata where riot police used batons to disperse the mob, who took control of the roads to disrupt the traffic.

A road side tea vendor was seen selling hot tea wearing helmet.

Bandh supporters put lock on the main gate at Barasat Post Office, which was broke open to resume the postal services.

Commuters at the Howrah station faced hurdles in getting pre-paid taxi after alighting from trains.

Stone throwing at the moving bus was happened at Cooch Behar in north Bengal where some passengers were hurt.

Government buses were vandalised at steel town of Durgapur in Burdwan district.

Many shops were seen shut at whole sale market in Burrabazar where some Congress supporters were also seen enforcing to shut down the shutters of the shops.

Aviation services were in operations like any other week days.

The CPI-M took out rallies at different parts of the city and districts in support of the shut down for 24 hours.

Protesters blocked railway tracks in many districts of West Bengal forcing the India Railway to rescheduled the train services.
