Coronavirus: Two medical students in Mumbai kept in isolation

New Delhi/IBNS: Two medical students in Mumbai have been quarantined in a government hospital after they returned from Wuhan, China, the epicentre of novel coronavirus outbreak, media reports said.

Both the students, aged 24, returned from Wuhan, the capital city of China's Hubei province, on Jan 25, according to Hindustan Times. They have been quarantined at the civic-run Kasturba Gandhi Hospital on Saturday, following the new rules of the state government.

So far, the students have not shown any symptons visible in people infected by the new strain of coronavirus. Their blood samples have been sent for examination to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. They will be kept in isolation until they test negative, the report said.

On Feb 4, the government issued a new directive, requiring isolation of all the people returning from China's Wuhan, said the report. After the new rule, the authorities tracked down the two students and quarantined them as a precaution.

Earlier, nine people from the city were kept in isolation in the ospital but were released after they tested negative.

As death toll due to coronavirus outbreak crossed 800 in China, India has also stepped up monitoring of the virus outbreak, putting 9,452 people under community surveillance in 32 states or UTs.

As of now 1818 flights and 1,97,192 passengers were screened so far at 21 Airports. Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is extending all the possible support to the States/UTs in order to combat the situation arise due to Novel Coronavirus, read a government statement.

"9452 persons are presently under community surveillance in 32 States/UTs. The containment and prevention activities are being taken up on utmost priority. All the states are continually strengthening their rapid response teams to counter any eventuality," read the statement.

The government said 1510 samples have been tested and 1507 samples were found negative except for 3 samples which had tested positive already from Kerala.
