Contest in Delhi is between AAP and BJP: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 15 (IBNS): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said the main contest in Delhi elections is between his party AAP and the BJP.

"I appeal to the people of Delhi not to waste their votes on Congress. The contest is between the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party," Kejriwal told NDTV in an interview.

The former Delhi Chief Minister who quit over the Jan Lokpal Bill issue claimed in the interview that AAP will get between 45 and 50 seats this time.

He said this time people know that there are two parties between which they have to choose. He said there is a pro-incumbency in favour of AAP this time.

He said the BJP should focus on issues instead of branding him a Naxal (in reference to Modi's Ramlila Maidan speech where he called him without naming an anarchist and should be in jungle like Naxals).

Amid a different national scene, Delhi Assembly elections will be held on Feb. 7 while counting of votes would  be held on Feb 10.

The election is necessitated as former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned on Feb 14 last year after remaining in power for 49 days over the Jan Lokpal Bill. Though AAP did not have the required majority in a hung post-poll situation, it managed to form  government with outside support of the Congress.

The Delhi Assembly was dissolved in November last year when neither of the three major parties- the BJP, the Congress, and AAP - could said they could form a government.

The BJP swept all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi in the national elections last May, promising to be a more formidable force the AAP and the Congress have to fight with.

Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, which sprang surprise by winning 27 seats last time, is fighting polls with the same leader.

The Congress will be led by former Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken while former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit has reportedly declined to be in the fray.
