Congress' reservation for women in UP polls is an election drama: BSP supremo Mayawati

Lucknow/UNI/IBNS: Terming the announcement of 40 percent seat reservation for women in Uttar Pradesh assembly polls by Congress as a poll gimmick, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has slammed the Congress saying in Punjab the party was trying to woo the Dalits and now women in UP.

In a series of tweets in Hindi on Tuesday, Mayawati said, "When Congress was in power and had good days, they did not remember Dalits, backwards and women. But now when their bad days are not ending, they have remembered women in UP like Dalits in Punjab. The announcement of giving 40 percent tickets to them is their pure election drama."

She said, "If the concern of the Congress towards women was so just and sincere, then why their government at the Center did not make a law to give 33 percent reservation to women in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies? The nature of Congress is 'to say something and do something else' which raises question mark on their intention and policy." (sic)

Mayawati further added that in the country, women constitute half of the population and not only for their welfare, but also for their safety and respect, a concerted and sincere effort is required.

"But it require a continuous process and a strong will power, which is lacking in Congress as well as in BJP while on the other hand BSP has shown it by doing things in the past in UP," BSP chief said.

In a surprising move, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Tuesday announced the party will give 40 percent seats to women candidates in the upcoming state elections, which are scheduled to be held early 2022.

"This decision is for women who want a change," Priyanka said making the announcement.

"If all decisions were dependent on me, I would have gone for 50 percent women candidates," she said.

However, the Congress leader is yet to decide on whether she herself would contest or not.
