Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury requests PM Modi to deploy more Army personnel in Amphan-hit Bengal
New Delhi/IBNS: Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deploy more Army personnel to manage the post-Cyclone Amphan situation in West Bengal, blaming the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for the prevalent mismanagement in the state.
Chowdhury has requested Modi, who had visited West Bengal on Friday to assess the post-Amphan situation, to deploy more Army personnel taking the state government in confidence.
"The state administration has been miserably failing to cope, with this disastrous situation, therefore may I request you to send more contingents of Army personnel in order to restore normalcy in Bengal in general and Kolkata & surrounding in particular while taking the state into confidence," wrote Chowdhury in a letter to the PM.
In the letter, the Congress MP from West Bengal's Baharampur has briefed to his arch-rival Modi that most parts of south Bengal, where Amphan had hit on last Wednesday, are still out of electricity, water supply.
Cyclone Amphan on Wednesday pummelled the eastern state of West Bengal leaving scores of people dead, countless homeless, besides plunging large parts of the state without electricity, internet connections and other communications.
Over 80 people in the state have lost their lives.
As per the state's request, the central government on Saturday deployed five columns of Indian Army to manage the post-Amphan situation.
On the other hand, common people have been protesting against the state administration for no restoration of electricity even days after the cyclone had hit the state.
However, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation or CESC, which provides electricity in the households of Kolkata, is not under the state government.
Facing the protests in parts of south Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday night visited the CESC office urging the authority to immediately restore electricity.
Though electricity in several houses are restored, people in large parts of the city are still without power supply.
