Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appears in court in defamation case, granted bail

Patna, Jul 6 (UNI/IBNS) In a major development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday granted bail after he appeared before a local court here in connection with a defamation case filed against him for his alleged derogatory remark against all those having surname of Modi during an election speech in Bengaluru in recently held Lok Sabha elections.

Gandhi appeared before the special court of Kumar Gunjan constituted for hearing the cases against MPs and MLAs, who pleaded no guilty after charges against him were read out in open court in connection with the case.

Gandhi denied all the charges describing it as baseless.

Senior advocate of Patna High Court Shashi Anugrah Narain appeared for Gandhi in the court while Pramod Kumar Jha pleaded the case for his client Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.

Kumar had requested the court that Mr Gandhi was present in person and

the opportunity should be utilised in completing the formalities of reading out charges against him which was accepted by the court.

Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi had lodged defamation case against Mr Gandhi alleging that he had hurt the sentiments and defamed all those having surname of Modi during his election speech in Bengaluru.

Gandhi in his speech had questioned how people with surname of Modi were corrupt and cited names of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lalit Modi and Neerav Modi to substantiate his charge. Mr Lalit Modi and Neerav Modi are facing corruption charge involving huge amount.
