Congress approaches Election Commission to defer Modi biopic release

New Delhi, Mar 25 (UNI): Alleging that the biopic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ‘PM Narendra Modi’ was political and intended to get mileage ahead of Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on Monday approached the Election Commission to defer the release of the film.

A delegation, comprising senior Congress leaders Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Randeep Singh Surjewala said the movie was political and violated the spirit of the Constitution.

“A film being made on Narendra Modi to be launched just a few days before election, its purpose is political. Three producers and actor belong to BJP, and the director is involved in Vibrant Gujarat,” said Mr Sibal.

He also said the timing of the release, content and motive all is political and added that "this is just to get mileage ahead of Lok Sabha elections”.

“We have requested Election Commission that political propaganda of this kind must be regulated,” said Mr Sibal.

The movie, directed by Omung Kumar, has Bollywood actor Vivek Obroi playing Modi. The movie is set to release on April 5, merely a week before the first phase of Lok Sabha polls which will be held on April 11.

The film was earlier scheduled to release on April 12.

Earlier, the DMK and CPI also demanded the poll body to defer the release date of the movie, citing the violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
