Compliment or controversy? Trump hails India, then shares racist rant

US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised India as a “great country” led by a “very good friend,” even as he faced criticism for reposting a podcast carrying derogatory remarks about India and other nations.

According to Christopher Elms, the US leader spoke warmly about India, highlighting his personal rapport with its leadership.

“India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top,” Donald Trump said, underscoring his ties with New Delhi.

Reposts podcast calling India ‘hell hole’

Earlier in the day, Donald Trump reposted content from Michael Savage’s podcast Savage Nation, which described India, China, and other countries in offensive terms, including “hell holes.”

The podcast included inflammatory claims about immigrants, alleging that people from these countries travel to the US to secure citizenship for their children under birthright laws.

Rant targets birthright citizenship

In the podcast, Michael Savage argued for changes to US birthright citizenship laws, making unsubstantiated claims about immigrants and using derogatory language.

Sharing the clip, Donald Trump also criticised ongoing debates around the issue, including discussions linked to the US Supreme Court.

Fact-check flags claim as incorrect

In a recent interview, Donald Trump claimed the United States is the only country offering birthright citizenship — a statement that has been widely disputed.

A fact-check by CNN noted that around three dozen countries, including Canada and Mexico, grant citizenship based on place of birth.

India responds cautiously

Reacting to the controversy, Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen some reports. That is where I leave it,” offering a measured response to the remarks circulating online.
