Communal tensions in Tripura’s Unakoti leave several injured, houses destroyed
Tension erupted between two communities in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Saturday following a dispute over subscription collection for a local fair, leaving at least five to six people injured and several houses damaged by fire, media reports said.
According to police, the clash began when a group stopped a timber-laden vehicle at Saidarpar village under Fatikroy police station limits and demanded a contribution for the community fair.

A family from one community allegedly refused to pay, prompting members of the other community to retaliate.
The argument quickly escalated into communal violence, with incidents of arson, vandalism, and property damage, including a timber shop and a local place of worship.
In response, the Tripura government imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, deployed a large contingent of security forces, and suspended mobile internet services across the Kumarghat Sub-Division for 48 hours as a precautionary measure.
At least eight individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the clashes.
Central forces conducted flag marches in affected areas, and authorities said the situation is currently under control.
Police warned that the enforcement measures, including the internet suspension and deployment of additional forces, are intended to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order in the district.
