Citizenship Bill will be passed in Parliament soon: PM Modi in Assam
Guwahati, Jan 4 (IBNS): While massive protests are going on in Assam by several organizations against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed his confidence that, the bill will be passed in the Parliament soon.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 is aimed to grant Indian citizenship to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Kicking off his election campaign for the 2019 general election in the Northeast, PM Modi on Friday addressed a public rally ‘Vijay Sankalpa Samabesh’ at Silchar in Assam and said that, the Citizenship bill will soon get parliament’s nod.
“This bill is linked with the emotions of the people, related to the life of the people. This bill was brought in 2016 after a lot of thinking. This bill is an atonement of injustice done in the past,” Modi said, flagging off BJP’s Lok Sabha poll campaign in the Northeast.
PM Modi hoped that, the bill would be passed in Parliament soon.
“Such power is trying to break our society. Some political parties fail to understand Assam and the country. They are thinking only about their vote banks. They didn’t think about the people of Assam. The deal for the security of the country will be never in our presence,” Modi said.
On the other hand, PM Modi assured the people of Assam that no genuine citizen will be left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
“I know you have faced lot of problems, but the process which was stuck from decades will finally reach its conclusion. I assured the people of Assam that, no genuine Indian citizen will be left out of the NRC,” Modi said.
The NRC seeks to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshis from the state and the names of over 40.07 lakh were excluded from the complete draft of the NRC published on July 30 last year.
About 30 lakh people had submitted their claims for inclusion of their names in the final NRC during the claims and objections submission process ended on December 31 last.
The BJP and its allies have set a target to win 21 out of the 25 parliamentary seats in eight states in the region and 11 out of 14 alone from Assam.
In 2014, the BJP had won seven seats from Assam.
In recent panchayat polls in Assam, the BJP emerged as a largest party by winning over 42 percent of total Panchayat seats.
