Chennai: DMK promises aplenty in manifesto

Chennai, Mar 19 (UNI/IBNS) The Opposition DMK on Tuesday made a slew of promises in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, including separate budget for agriculture, increasing IT exemption limit, release of Rajiv convicts, Tamil as official language and holding referendum among Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Releasing the manifesto, DMK President M K Stalin also promised to bring Education back in to the State list from concurrent list, abolition of NEET, waiver of educational loans and reverting back to the old pension scheme.

It also said the DMK would also stoutly oppose the Mekedatu dam project in Karnataka and construction of new dams by Kerala near Mullaiperiyar dam.

Stating that DMK in principle, was opposed to the existence of office of Governor in the state, he said it would strive for appointment of Governors by the President from the list of three eminent persons suggested by the Chief Ministers of respective states.

The manifesto said it would also continue to press for scrapping of Article 356 which provides for dismissal of elected governments.

'Continuing such a draconian provision brings discredit to India, the largest democracy in the world', it said and added that such provision was not found in any other Federal system.

Apart from working for setting up of Regional Councils of States, it said steps would be taken to make Tamil as one of the official languages at the Centre and also as co-official language in Central government offices in Tamil Nadu, besides making it as court language in Madras High court.

It also promised reservation in appointments in judiciary for those belonging to SC, ST, Backward and Most Backward Classes, OBC as Judges in all the court starting from sub-ordinate courts to High courts and Supreme Court.
