CDS Bipin Rawat dies in helicopter crash

New Delhi:  India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Confirming the development, India Air Force tweeted: "With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident."

"Gen Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was on a visit to Defence Services Staff College, Wellington (Nilgiri Hills) to address the faculty and student officers of the Staff Course today," read another tweet posted by the IAF.

Thirteen people, out of the 14 people who were traveling in the helicopter, have died in the crash.

One one of the rescued persons is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.

He has been identified as Gp Capt Varun Singh.

" Gp Capt Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff at DSSC with injuries is currently under treatment at Military Hospital, Wellington," IAF tweeted.
