Cartoonist Manjul gets second notice from X over controversial cartoon featuring Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata/IBNS: Cartoonist Manjul has received second notice from micro-blogging site X over his six-year-old cartoon on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, media reports said.
Manjul said he had received a similar notice from X four days earlier.
The cartoonist said he was told by X that the platform had received a complaint from the police.
"Seems the police have no other work to do. Now Kolkata Police have sent a letter to X to pull down an old cartoon for which I had received a similar notice at the behest of the Bengal Police a few days ago," Manjul told The Telegraph.
The cartoon, which dates back to 2019, was about the massive defections from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections that year.
The cartoon was originally published in an online portal and it was reposted (then retweeted) by Manjul.
On June 18, Manjul had received a notice from X that had flagged the objections from the police's cyber crime wing on two cartoons featuring Mamata Banerjee.
The episode is a reminder of the 2012 cartoon case where Jadavpur University professor Dr. Ambikesh Mahapatra was arrested for forwarding a satirical cartoon featuring Mamata Banerjee and her then aide Mukul Roy.
Later, the Supreme Court had dismissed Section 66A of the IT Act levelled against Dr. Mahapatra.
