Calcutta HC div. bench rejects Mamata's sister-in-law's plea against stay on top college principal removal order

Kolkata/IBNS: A division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Friday upheld the single bench order that had issued an interim stay on the show-cause notice and suspension order to Rani Birla Girls' College principal passed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee, who holds a post in the institution.

Kajari, who also happens to be a councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, is the working committee president of the top girls' college in the city.

Srabanti Bhattacharya, the college principal, had moved the single-bench of Justice Biswajit Basu challenging the suspension order served by Kajari last month.

The state government's counsel had requested Justice Basu to recuse himself from the case infuriating the judge.

But later Justice Basu recused himself and the matter was passed on the bench of Justice Bivas Pattanayak.

After Kajari challenged the order in the division-bench, Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobrata Kumar Mitra rejected her petition and upheld the single-bench order.

Apart from this, the single-judge bench had questioned Kajari's appointment to the administrative post of the college, which is located in the southern part of the city.

On September 17, Justice Pattanayak had questioned how Kajari going against the law was placed in the committee and even appointed as the president despite not being an educationist herself.

The judge had said whether her appointment was legal or not would have to be judged.

The matter would be next heard by the single-bench after eight weeks as it was already decided.
