BJP-TMC faceoff as Dilip Ghosh en-route to his constituency stopped by police
Kolkata/IBNS: A new faceoff between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal occurred on Sunday after the saffron party chief Dilip Ghosh, who was on his way to Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency to assess the cyclone Amphan-affected areas, was stopped by police.
After Ghosh's motorcade was stopped, the BJP MP took to his feet to reach his constituency.
Reacting to the incident, the BJP accused police of siding with the ruling party.
Hitting back at Ghosh, West Bengal Power Minister and senior TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay told a Bengali news channel, "The Prime Minister days ago acknowledged that our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tackled both Covid-19 and aftermath of Cyclone Amphan successfully. Dilip Ghosh is doing all these just to grab headlines on media."
Cyclone Amphan on Wednesday pummelled the eastern state of West Bengal leaving scores of people dead, countless homeless, besides plunging large parts of the state without electricity, internet connections and other communications.
Over 80 people in the state have lost their lives.
As per the state's request, the central government on Saturday deployed five columns of Indian Army to manage the post-Amphan situation.
On the other hand, common people are protesting against the state administration for no restoration of electricity even after four days since the cyclone hit the state.
However, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation or CESC, which provides electricity in the households of Kolkata, is not under the state government.
Facing the protests in parts of south Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday night visited the CESC office urging the authority to immediately restore electricity.
Though electricity in several houses are restored, people in large parts of the city are still without power supply.
