BJP set to form govt in Goa for third straight term with MGP pledging support
Panaji/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to retain Goa with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) pledging support of their MLAs to the saffron brigade.
The BJP won 20 seats in the 40-member Goa assembly and with the support of MGP and independent candidates, they now have 25 MLAs, a comfortable number to form the government in the state where the majority mark is 21. The MGP had stitched an alliance with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress ahead of the election.
While, MGP has two MLAs, independent candidates Antonio Vas, Chandrakant Shetye and Alex Reginald have vouched their supports to the saffron party.
However, the party, which had been an ally of both BJP and Congress, had indicated earlier that they would be the 'kingmaker' and will wait for the final results to pledge its support.
Meanwhile, the TMC ended up bagging no seats in the Goal Assembly, seemingly making it an end of roads for Mamata Banerjee's high political aim of setting a mark in Goa this election.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant won his seat with a considerably reduced margin. However, his win still consolidates his position in the party, which had come to be overtly challenged by several aspirants.
