New Delhi, June 2 (IBNS): Former Union Minister Tapan Sikdar died at AIIMS in New Delhi on Monday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was 70 when death came.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death and tweeted: " Shri Tapan Sikdar will be remembered for his rich contribution in building the BJP & his years of dedicated public service."

"Tapan Sikdar ji's demise is extremely saddening. May his soul rest in peace," he said.

He had contested the recently held Lok Sabha polls from Dum Dum seat in West Bengal. He, however, lost in the polls.

After his health deteriorated, he was admitted to AIIMS last week.
