Big boost for women's safety! Bengal govt to install CCTV cameras in state-run buses
Kolkata/IBNS: The new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal is stepping up efforts to improve women's safety on public transport by installing CCTV cameras in state-run buses.
CCTV cameras in new and existing buses
West Bengal Transport Minister Arjun Singh on Wednesday said all upcoming state-run buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras as a major step towards ensuring women's safety.
Speaking to IBNS on the sidelines of an event in Kolkata, Singh said, "The new state-run buses will have CCTV cameras installed and equipped with a control room."
"We are even trying to get it installed in the old buses still fit for service," the minister added after attending an event organised by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), West Bengal Chapter.

Extended night bus services
The government has already rolled out extended night bus services for late-night commuters, patients and their families.
The West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) has extended the last departure time of state-run buses from 8 pm to 10 pm on routes connecting major hospitals and railway stations in Kolkata.
The revised schedule came into effect on August 1.

Tram revival plans
Singh had earlier announced plans to revive and expand Kolkata's iconic tram services, a heritage and eco-friendly mode of transport.

The minister has also proposed introducing new battery-powered trams equipped with modern technology.
The government has assigned RITES to conduct a formal survey for the tram revival project.
Tram services had witnessed a steady decline under the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.
