New Delhi/IBNS: Bhutan has become the second country after Singapore to have BHIM-UPI acceptance at merchant locations, NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL).

Bhutan is also the first country to adopt India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) standards for its quick response (QR) code.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said  BHIM-UPI will help Indian tourists visiting “the land of happiness”, adding that “BHIM-UPI is one of the achievements of India in terms of fintech.”

In 2020-21, BHIM UPI processed 22 billion financial transactions worth Rs 41 lakh crore, Sithraman said.

It emerged as a powerful payment tool that helped people across the country during Covid-19 induced lockdown.

In 2020, India implement 68 days stringent lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus infection.
