Bengal: EC slaps notice on Mamata over 'gherao CRPF' remark, seeks explanation by Apr 10

New Delhi/IBNS: A day before the fourth phase of West Bengal assembly polls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday served a notice to West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee over her 'gherao the CRPF' remark, officials said on Friday.

The poll body has asked Mamata to explain her stand on the statement she made before 11 am on Apr 10 (Saturday).

On Wednesday, during a public meeting in Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi, Mamata had directed the women to gherao (restrain) the central paramilitary forces if they create any nuisance or obstruct voters from going to polling stations on the poll day.

The Election Commission, earlier on Wednesday (Apr 7), served another notice to the TMC chief for demanding votes on the communal ground and had sought her explanation by 48 hours.

Responding to the ECI's show-cause notice, Mamata on Thursday said during a public rally: "It doesn't matter even if they (EC) send 10 notices. I will again say all Hindus, Muslims vote for us unitedly. Why doesn't the EC serve notice to the Prime Minister who passes communal remarks on TV (rallies) everyday?"
