Backlash over assault on artists demanding nude dance

Guwahati, Jun 10 (UNI): An incident of alleged assault of a group of artists by some persons, demanding vulgar dance from the troupe, in Chaygaon area of Assam's Kamrup (rural) district has led to a massive backlash.

The incident happened two days back during a cultural function organised on the pretext of Eid celebration.

The artists from outstation, who had been invited to perform, were allegedly pressurized by a section of local people to perform nude dance and when they refused, the accused allegedly tried to strip the female performers and attacked the troupe.

The artists had managed to somehow escape and later approached the local police.

Police have already arrested four accused and investigation is on to identify and nab the others.

Following the incident, a public protest was taken out at Chaygaon.

People from various walks of life, including the harassed artists, participated in the rally, demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits and ensuring such incidents are not repeated.
