Attorney General gives consent to initiate criminal proceedings against Kunal Kamra for his SC tweets

New Delhi/IBNS: Attorney General of India KK Venugopal on Thursday gave consent to a lawyer to initiate criminal proceedings against comedian Kunal Kamra for his tweets suggesting the Supreme Court's alleged biases in granting interim bail to senior journalist Arnab Goswami.

After Republic TV journalist Goswami was granted bail in the 2018 abetment to suicide case on Wednesday, Kamra, a critic of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), lashed out at the topmost level of judiciary accusing it of working in association with the incumbent.

Kamra tweeted, "The Supreme Court of this country is the the most Supreme joke of this country..."

"The pace at which the Supreme Court operates in matters of “National Interests” it’s time we replace Mahatma Gandhi’s photo with Harish Salve’s photo...," he said in another tweet.

In a separate tweet by Kamra, the BJP's flag was seen unfurled in the Supreme Court.

Goswami, who was heckled by Kamra on a flight months ago, was arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 53-year old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother couple of years ago in Maharashtra, a state ruled by an opposition party.

Kunal Kamra-Arnab Goswami Episode

Kamra, in the video posted on his Twitter handle in January this year, was seen attacking Goswami over his brand of  “journalism” and provoked him to respond holding that he was doing this for late Dalit student Rohith Vemula's mother.

He asked him if he is a "coward" or a "nationalist", ridiculing the media personality for his stand and aggression against certain groups like JNU students, liberals, et al. Goswami, who helms pro-government Republic TV, reportedly called him mentally unstable during the incident and kept quiet.

He even challenged Goswami, who was on his laptop sporting dark glasses, to speak out against him identifying himself as “anti-national” and one of  “tukde-tukde narrative”.

Though Goswami ignored all the questions, Kamra's act had attracted bans by several airlines from travelling on flights.

Recent Contempt Of Court Case

The Supreme Court in August held senior advocate Prashant Bhsushan guilty of contempt for tweeting against the judiciary and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde.

Bhushan wrote on Twitter in June, "When historians in future look back at the last 6 years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal Emergency, they will particularly mark the role of the Supreme Court in this destruction, & more particularly the role of the last 4 CJIs".

In another tweet, he had said, "The CJI rides a Rs 50-lakh motorcycle belonging to a BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] leader at Raj Bhavan, Nagpur, without wearing a mask or helmet, at a time when he keeps the SC on lockdown mode denying citizens their fundamental right to access justice!"

Though Bhushan was given three days to retract from his statement even after being held guilty, the senior advocate had refused to do so saying any kind of an apology would be insincere.

Later, Bhushan was fined Re. 1 by the top court.
