Assam flood situation worsens, death toll mounts to 43
Guwahati, Aug 5 (IBNS): The flood situation in Assam is still grim with nearly 1.1 lakh people of six districts being affected and the death toll rising up to 43 so far.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two more people died in flood-hit Sivasagar district.
The affected districts include Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Darrang.
Over 91,000 people have been affected alone in Golaghat district.
About 163 villages of the flood-hit districts are currently under water and flood water submerged nearly 11,000 hectares crop land.
Meanwhile, over 23,500 flood affected peope have taken shelter in 132 relief camps and centres set by the district administration.
Following torrential rains in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, the Brahmaputra river at Nimatighat in Jorhat district, Dhansiri river at Golaghat town and Numaligarh in Golaghat district and Jia Bharali river at NT road crossing in Sonitpur district are flowing above the danger mark.
According to the authorities, nearly 22,000 animals have been affected in the second wave of flood in the state.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are engaged in rescue operations in the flood-hit areas.
