Assam: Flood situation gradually improves, death toll goes up to 50
Guwahati, Jul 19 (IBNS): The flood situation in Assam has gradually improved but several lakhs of people are still living under water in the state.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, over 48.87 lakh people of 27 districts of the state have been affected in the deluge.
At least 50 persons have lost their lives due to flood and landslide the state so far.
11 persons have died in Barpeta, Dhubri and Morigaon district in the past 24 hours.
According to the reports, five persons were drowned in floodwaters in Dhubri district while three each in Barpeta and Morigaon districts.
3705 villages and 1,78,938 hectare of croplands are still under water.
Over 10.99 lakh people have been affected alone in Barpeta district while 10.85 lakh people in Dhubri district, 7.40 lakh people in Morigaon, 5.54 lakh people in South Salmara, 3.11 lakh people in Goalpara, 1.57 lakh people in Darrang, 1.32 lakh people in Nalbari, 1.58 lakh people in Bongaigaon, 1.43 lakh people in Kamrup districts.
The administration has set up 755 relief camps and 304 Relief Distribution Centres in the flood-hit districts and 1,47,833 flood-affected people have taken shelter in the relief camps.
On the other hand, the water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are receding but still flowing above danger level marks in many places in the state.
