Assam flood death toll climbs to 75; Over 3 lakh still affected as relief efforts intensify

While the number of affected people has declined compared to previous days, the flood situation continues to remain critical in several parts of the state.

Among the fatalities, seven deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

The flood situation has improved marginally in Assam. However, vast areas remain submerged, and thousands of distressed people are still waiting for relief.

Government Announces Additional Relief Measures

The Assam government has announced additional relief measures and relaxed ex gratia norms to expedite compensation for the families of flood victims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reviewed the flood situation with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and assured all possible support from the Centre for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Relief and Rescue Operations Continue

Relief and rescue operations are continuing, with state agencies working alongside the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency teams in the worst-affected districts.

Hundreds of social organisations, volunteer groups and individuals have joined the relief effort by distributing food, drinking water, medicines, clothing and other essential supplies to flood-affected families.

Widespread Damage Across the State

The floods have caused extensive damage to homes, roads, embankments and agricultural land, while livestock losses have added to the hardship faced by affected communities.

The state government has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as water levels in some rivers continue to pose a risk despite the gradual improvement in the overall flood situation.

Private Sector and Celebrities Extend Support

Relief efforts have also received support from the private sector, with Air India Express waiving cargo charges for transporting relief material to the flood-hit state.

Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Salman Khan have appealed to the public to support relief efforts for flood victims, drawing national attention to the humanitarian crisis.
