Army officer killed in J&K encounter

Kupwara, Apr 8 (IBNS) A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army was killed while four police personnel of Special Operations Group (SOG) were injured in a ongoing encounter which started on Monday in North Kashmir's Zoonarewshi area of Kupwara town, 70 kms away from the summer capital of Srinagar.

According to reports, early Tuesday morning, when the Army started its operation, the holed up militants fired with automatic weapons on its jawans and killed one JCO, while four other SGO personnel were seriously injured.

The Army and police launched a joint operation against the militants who were hiding in a village in the area.

The gun-battle, which began on Monday, continued throughout the night. Two policemen have been seriously injured in the encounter.

A top police official in the area said two militants have been killed so far and the gunfight is still on.

He further said that one Army officer and a policeman have also been killed far.

Army spokesperson Lt Col NN Joshi also confirmed the news.

He told IBNS one Army personnel and a cop, along with two terrorits, have been killed so far.

He further said that operation is still going on in the area.

"We hope that we will neutralize the militants, who are hiding in the area, very soon," said Joshi.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Abdul Gani Mir could not be reached for comments despite repeated attempts.
